And the LORD said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod.
Exodus 4:2 (KJV)
Bottom line: What you have is what you need.
Teaching
Often, we find ourselves in a stage in life where we feel like we need God’s supernatural supply to forge ahead. And when this supply seems not to come, we get discouraged, and sometimes, get offended.
Moses, the great prophet of God found himself in that exact position in Exodus 4. God appeared to him in a burning bush and gave him the mighty task of delivering the children of Israel from bondage and captivity which they suffered for over 400 years in Egypt. Though Moses had received some military training while in Pharaoh’s palace, he never had any experience leading a whole nation to a certain but unknown destination.
Moses, wondering how he could achieve that with no resources or army at his disposal, complained to God. God then asked him a remarkable question:
And the LORD said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod.
Exodus 4:2 (KJV)
While Moses assumed he had nothing, God drew his attention to what he had in His hands. We find out later in the story that the rod that Moses had in his hands is what he used to perform mighty signs and wonders in Israel, which forced the pharaoh to liberate Israel. This was the same rod that Moses used to part the Red Sea through which Israel moved on its dry ground.
We usually find ourselves in this same position where we feel like we need the help of God such that we can advance into the next stage of our lives. And in such times, we focus a lot on what we do not have, and we complain to God about it, instead of looking at what we have and appreciating God for it.
Usually, the tools you need to advance are already in your hands, the problem is, that you don’t pay attention to it. You don’t give it the importance that it deserves, you neglect it, yet you seek for God to provide a solution from heaven.
You may not have connections to people of high standings or sponsors, but you have people that the Lord will bring around you to assist you. You may not have a family that cares for you, but you have friends who are ready to go the extra mile for you. So, do not focus on what you do not have, but on what you do have. What you have is all you need. What you have is what will take you through. Therefore, don’t be mad at God because of your situation, but be thankful to Him because he has made a way of escape.
