Bottom line: We must engage in spiritual warfare with the right weapons.
Teaching
The Bible teaches us that every man born into the kingdom of God is by default engaged in a battle against the kingdom of darkness. This battle is not to secure our lives because we are untouchable in Christ Jesus. Our lives are hidden with Christ, in God.
3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

That means, if the devil must get to you, he must pass through God first. Hallelujah. But we battle against the devil for souls that are not saved yet. The Bible says:
In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
2 Corinthians 4:4 (KJV)
Satan holds the inhabitants of the earth captive, and he has blinded them so that they may not see the light of the Gospel of Christ and be saved. Therefore, our job is to deliver them from the captivity of the devil.
16 But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;
17 Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee,
18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

But the devil will not let them go without putting up a fight. Therefore, we are engaged in a battle against the enemy over the souls of men.
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Ephesians 6:12
Winning men into the kingdom is our number one priority because it is our number one assignment.
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

We must fight the devil, thus it is important we have the right gear for the job.

The Bible tells us that the weapons we need to engage in this battle are not physical weapons, but they are spiritual. Ephesians 6:14-18 gives us a short list of these weapons.
14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

In summary, we must be geared with the word of God, prayer, faith, and the preaching of the gospel.
With these weapons, we are sure of victory over the forces of darkness. Hallelujah.
