6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.
2 Timothy 1:6 (KJV)
Bottom line: You are a gifted child.
Teaching
God, our heavenly father has blessed us with every blessing we can think of. Because of his eternal love for us, he has endowed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms.
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
Ephesians 1:3 (KJV)
Included in the blessings are spiritual gifts which he has embedded in our spirits. No child of God is not gifted. Immediately you got born again and received eternal life, you received spiritual gifts as well. No king will have his child go without special gifts that will distinguish them in society. A prince must possess something that sets him apart from the rest. So also a child of God possesses special gifts that set us apart from the rest of the world.
5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. 6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;
Romans 12:5-6 (KJV)
It is exciting to know that you have wonderful gifts from God, locked in your spirit. Now, these gifts were given for your benefit. They were given to put you in a position of advantage. It is your gifting that sets you apart from the masses.
16 A man’s gift maketh room for him,
Proverbs 18:16 (KJV)
and bringeth him before great men.
Joseph is a good example of someone whose gift brought him into the mist of a king. Joseph was gifted in interpreting dreams. This gift alone made him second in command in Egypt, after Pharaoh.
38 And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is?
39 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art: 40 Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou.
41 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt.
Genesis 41:38-41 (KJV)
Daniel was also gifted in dream interpretation. He interpreted Nebuchadnezzar’s dream and that made him become one of the governors in Babylon.
47 The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou couldest reveal this secret.
48 Then the king made Daniel a great man, and gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon.
Daniel 2:47-48 (KJV)
But many are those who never discover the gifts of God in their lives. They have never been informed that they are gifted.
Well, some gifts of the Spirit of God are well spelled out in the Bible.
1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.
1 Corinthians 12:1 (KJV)
8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
1 Corinthians 12:8-10 (KJV)
28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
1 Corinthians 12:28 (KJV)
These gifts and more exist in the kingdom of God, and we are blessed with them for our benefit. But you may never benefit from them if you do not harness them and bring them to maturity. So, Paul, the apostle advises Timothy, a young pastor and his spiritual son.
6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.
2 Timothy 1:6 (KJV)
You must stir the gifts of God in you by praying in tongues and engaging in other spiritual activities like studying the word, fasting, etc., so that you may begin to reap the benefits of these gifts in your life.
Further Study
- 1 Timothy 4:14-15 [Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.]
Reflection
- Do you know the gifts of God in your life?
- Are you actively grooming and using these gifts?
Prayer
Thank you, Lord, for blessing me with wonderful gifts by your spirit who lives in me. I pray that as I apply myself to demonstrate your gifts in my life, it shall bring me great profit and make a way for me to stand before kings, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
