14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
Hebrews 4:14-16 (KJV)
15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
Bottom line: You have access to God’s throne room.
Teaching
The Bible narrates the story of a woman called Esther, who was an ordinary citizen of the kingdom of Persia, but by the grace of God, she was chosen and made the queen of the whole kingdom. The Persian kingdom had various laws in which their violation could be sanctioned by death. And one of these laws was going inside the king’s throne room without permission.
If a man or woman, be it a man of high standing in the kingdom or an ordinary citizen, would enter the king’s throne room uninvited, he stood the chance of losing his life, except if the king would stretch out his royal scepter towards the person, which would mean that that person’s life would be spared.
10 Again Esther spake unto Hatach, and gave him commandment unto Mordecai;
11 All the king’s servants, and the people of the king’s provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.
Esther 4:10-11 (KJV)
Queen Esther found herself in a position where she had to go into the king’s presence uninvited, to save the life of her people. When you read the full story, you see how eventually God was with her, the scepter of mercy was stretched towards her, and her life was spared.
This story mirrors the relationship that God had with his people. In the Old Testament days, the people of God believed that you could not see God or approach him and live. God himself told Moses the same thing.
And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.
Exodus 33:20 (KJV)
This was because God is too holy, and his eyes cannot behold iniquity.
Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil,
Habakkuk 1:13
and canst not look on iniquity:
wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously,
and holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he?
Therefore, to approach God, the people of God used mediators, who were priests. These priests were sanctified for the service of God. But even the priest could not approach God very closely. Only Moses or a chosen prophet of God could. Aaron the high priest at that time lost his two sons because they approached God with an unholy act.
And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not. 2 And there went out fire from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD.
Leviticus 10:1-2 (KJV)
But hundreds of years later, Jesus, the son of God made it possible through his death on the cross that everyone who believes in his name should have unrestricted access to the throne of God. According to the Bible, the curtain of God’s temple, which divided the holiest place—where the ark of God—symbolizing God’s presence—from the holiest place where the priest served—was ripped in two at the hour of Jesus’ death. In other words, it is now possible to approach God fearlessly.
Everyone who accepts Jesus and his sacrifice on the cross now has direct access to the Father. No human mediator is needed like in the days of old because Jesus Christ now stands as our mediator.
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
1 Timothy 2:5 (KJV)
Furthermore, Jesus said:
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
John 14:6 (KJV)
He is the way to the father. Through Jesus Christ, we have direct access to our heavenly Father.
Our opening verse says:
14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
Hebrews 4:14-16 (KJV)
You don’t need to fear anymore to approach God because of your sins. The blood of Jesus, if you accept him, will purge you of all sins and give you direct access to our heavenly father. You don’t need a man to talk to God on your behalf. Through Jesus Christ, you have direct access to God. Therefore, be bold in God’s presence today, and obtain grace from his throne. Hallelujah.
